Help Ms. Bovill

I teach 8th grade mathematics and science at a Title 1 charter school in inner city Maryland.

Our school is completely inclusive so we have a plethora of different student needs. Many students learn using a hands-on approach, but our school does not have enough manipulatives to accommodate them. Using manipulatives helps with students' conceptual understanding of math concepts and they are a tool that helps so many kids!

In 8th grade, students begin their first real taste of Algebra, and it would be great to use Algebra tiles to solidify their understanding of equations and variables while we move into real manipulation of these concepts. Furthermore, my goal is have my students take and pass their high school Algebra test required for graduation. In addition to Algebra, the test covers data analysis and probability. In the past these kids have had difficulty with probability problems, so having actual cards, dice, and spinners will again help them to see the concepts and grasp the meaning and processes involved. Finally, fractions, decimals, and percents are a constant difficulty with kids in our school and across the city. Cuisenaire rods are a wonderful tool that helps students see the relationships among rational numbers and better understand the concept of equivalent numbers.

You can help all my students succeed in math by helping provide these materials. Accommodating the needs of diverse learners is the ultimate goal of education, and you can be a part of that, starting with my classroom!
