Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Imagine having to learn a whole new language and associated foreign concepts in a single school year. This is the expectation for every student in freshman biology. English language learners carry double the burden.

Our school is the cornerstone of a working-class, predominantly 1st and 2nd generation Latino neighborhood located in the heart of a major metropolitan area.

It is not uncommon for student and family priorities to lean further towards immediate employment over education. The students are thoughtful and caring to one another and to the school but they often lack the academic skills or support necessary to make them the successful students that their personalities, values, and behaviors would suggest. As such, Davis is an incredibly nurturing school with a faculty, staff, and administration that goes beyond the call of duty on a daily basis to help students succeed. Our state test scores are an inaccurate and poor reflection of the real learning and growth that happens here. That being said, we have faced particular challenges with ESL student growth and have received additional support this year to address that weakness.

My Project

In biology, students are required to learn more vocabulary terms than they would learn in a foreign language course. Additionally they are expected to internalize the novel and complex concepts underlying their new vocabulary and make connections between it all! This is a heavy task and it requires students to have rich and diverse interaction with the language of biology. Students learn best when they can physically interact with the material, receive immediate, low-risk feedback, and when the activities they are doing require them to make connections. Manipulatives are paper-based activities that require students to sequence, sort, label, identify, compare, review, etc. Manipulatives allow students to tactically manipulate the words they must learn and connect and relate them to each other and to diagrams/ graphics. I have created manipulatives for approximately 25% of the content I teach and would like to continue to expand this library to increase student understanding and success.

Last year, the DonorsChoose community graciously raised the funds necessary to purchase a color printer for my classroom.

The students benefited immensely from the clarity and reinforcement the full color manipulatives provided. We were generating and using so many manipulatives, however, that we have now run out of ink. I would like to continue to create and improve the manipulative tools we use in biology and some color ink would make it that much easier. Thank you!
