My Students

I teach an amazing group of students with special needs in an urban title one charter school in Baltimore City. They come to school every day excited and ready to learn! They want to learn so much about the world around them and what's beyond the walls of our classroom. However, the students that I work with bring a lot of baggage into our classroom and it is my job to help them leave that baggage at the door, be kids for a while and learn through fun and exciting ways.

My students disabilities range from Autism to Learning Disabilities and I find that the more hands on and interactive learning can be, the more beneficial it is to my students.

Due to their disabilities, I am constantly changing up my teaching practices and finding new and exciting ways to reach and challenge my students without having them become frustrated and give up.

My Project

I teach a group of students with disabilities and we are constantly working on money, time and writing skills. Paper and pencil tasks bore my students and aren't a good use of our time. Interactive, hands on activities feed my students love of learning, keep them engaged and help them make new connections to the world around them.

The materials I'm requesting will work in just this interactive way!

The time resources will help my students be able to work on their time skills with real world application. The restaurant money set will help my students add and subtract money (and three digit numbers with decimals) in ways where they will have fun and be engaged without completing word problems in the paper and pencil way. The community books and puzzles, will help my students learn about the important parts of the community around us-so that when we go out into the community they will know what to expect and can show what they have learned! The writing resources will help my students practice writing perfect sentences.

These materials will help my students gain important life skills that they will need to be important members of society and the community. I am excited to use these resources to help my students learn in new and exciting ways!
