This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have 26 eager and excited fourth graders. They all come to school ready to learn, no matter the challenges they face at home. They are a diverse group of students from low-income backgrounds who speak multiple languages, play sports, have different interests and talents, and are excited to gain new knowledge each day.

They are passionate about making a difference in the world through many channels.

My students see how current issues in the world are impacting them, their families, and communities, and they are ready to take charge in having their voices heard. Although they are 9 and 10 years old, they are ready to create change and be social activists.

My Project

These various LEGO sets will be used to support reading and writing and to enrich both subjects with stem connections. Due to the pandemic, many of my students are writing 1-2 grade levels below a fourth grade level and they become incredibly stressed and frustrated during writing time. These LEGO sets would be use in so many ways to support reading. One example of how I would use them is that students will use the LEGO sets to build story boards. When we build the storyboards we will take about the engineering process and explore the different areas of STEM within each storyboard experience. I also would use these LEGOs to support our thematic unit focused on engineering. In this unit, students need to design a solution to a problem we have at school. Students would use these LEGOs to build their solution. In years past, we haven't had any materials for this project so students have just drawn these images or have built their solutions with paper projects.

These LEGO sets would allow students a hands on learning experience that would support connections between literacy and stem.

They would provide students a scaffold needed to support their writing while learning about STEM, the engineering process, and careers related to this field.
