Using Games to Uncover Mathematical Ideas

Help me give my students an opportunity to try out a new game, search for the math used to design it, and create their own version of the game using what they've learned.

My Project

I teach a Game Design class in which students look for the math embedded in the games that we play and then create their own games. Chameleon, Code Names, and Happy Salmon are great games because they get students talking to one another and joking around. Games like this help them to get more comfortable with one another socially, an important skill that I teach in this class along with math topics. We explore many board and card games in this class that touch on combinatorics, probability, and other similar ideas. Taco Cat Goat Cheese Pizza is a great one for discussing probability in games. Monopoly Deal creates a conversation about how to take a game that already exists, keep the main elements, and make it easier to play.

The great thing about board and card games is that they are an accessible way to get students thinking about mathematical ideas.

The math is sometimes embedded in game play, but always embedded in the design. To create their own version they have to consider how design elements will make the game interesting. If they ignore the mathematical components, it will be harder to create a viable game.

We also talk about what goes into making a game and the importance of considering your audience and what you expect them to know before playing. This helps them to think critically about the game they create and fully work through the design and engineering process along the way.
