Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our eleventh graders, founding students at our very public school, have sacrificed hours of would-be-kid-time to catch up in literacy and mathematics so that that this time next year, they will be applying to college. This means, however, that arts and wellness needs sometimes take a backseat.

The folks of grade eleven are founding students at school.

Our school is an irregular public school, one with a sagging roof and no school yard. One that is on a street with three liquor stores and no bookstore. Our school is one filled to capacity and overflowing with the determination and energy of kids and their families. Our students are wry and resourceful and thoughtful and dear. Our students are decent, proud, generous and kind. Our students are mostly poor, mostly of color, mostly second language learners, mostly neighborhood kids. Most of our students will be first generation college students. Our students are urban and urbane. Our students are curious and fierce and loving. Our students believe love makes a families, that all families are complicated, that no one is waiting for superman.

My Project

We're in the throes of planning a series of arts and wellness events at our very urban, very public school. One such event in the works is to invite folks from Abada-Capoeira Bronx (ACBX) to teach a series of capoeira workshops. At these workshops, students will participate in this Brazilian martial art; learn the history of enslaved West Africans in Brazil who masked preparation for revolt as dance; practice Portuguese and earn art/wellness credit.

While our relatively fledgling school has had modest success to date, access to arts and to wellness projects have been lacking, despite our best efforts.

It seems that when faced with the reality of shrinking budgets, our focus on college acceptance/college graduation (the truest test of our success, in coming years) has nudged us to reconcile the zero sum game of time by spending it on academics, first. Our students crave outlets for self expression through movement; capoeira can help.
