My Students

Our students are enthusiastic, kind, and are held to a high academic standard. They are also combating socioeconomic disadvantages, learning barriers, and communication challenges. My classroom is thoughtfully designed to promote independence in learning and social development. I work to build communication supports, sensory diets, and personal interests into our daily experiences. With these materials, we can bolster meaningful learning opportunities.

My Project

When working within a public school district, students in self-contained classes are sometimes provided for as secondary to mainstream classrooms. Materials for designing individualized learning experiences are not always readily available for these smaller classroom at the start of the year. Teachers and other school staff typically spend a large amount of resources to obtained these materials each year for students with high-level needs.

Our class continues to promote student leadership and development despite facing many challenges.

Upon returning to our school, our building underwent many changes that affected our learning environment. Furniture had to be replaced, experiences condemned by the pandemic had to be recreated, and students needed support in adjusting to major changes in their young lives. All of these needs were compounded by the expected need for materials to create self-led learning stations and support individual development. Fulfilling this project will help bolster the academic resilience of students who have complex needs.

These materials will be used in a new classroom. We have changed locations and students since the beginning of this school year. The materials are needed to rebuild independent learning centers and subject investigation stations.
