Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Imagine trying to see someone's work by looking at an 8 1/2 x 11 sheet of paper from across the room. Impossible, right? Well, that's our struggle in the classroom. My students learn best from each other, but it is hard to allow everyone to really see what the others have done.

I teach in a Boston Public School with a 94% free lunch population.

This means that most of the families I serve live below the poverty line. There is also a high incidence of second-language learners, which adds another layer to my work as a teacher. Furthermore, this school was designated as one of the "Turnaround Schools," which means it was deemed under-performing too many years in a row, and underwent a major change in staff. So now, as a newly-formed school, we have 3 years to show distinct growth in test scores. That all being said, my class this year is amazing. They are a bright, motivated, and kind bunch of people. I truly enjoy them each individually. This makes me even more driven to be sure that they receive the absolute best education I can provide. The key to teaching students at this age-level and with the aforementioned limitations is to bring the learning to life. This means doing projects, demonstrations, hands-on activities, and looking at samples of work.

My Project

A document camera (in cooperation with my laptop and a projector) would allow us to look at the work done by a student immediately after completion. Currently, if I want the class to see someone's work, I need to either copy it all onto the board, which takes a long time, or copy it onto a transparency and borrow a projector from someone else... all of which takes even longer. This way, I can collect the students together, put the child's work under the camera, and we will all see its image projected onto the wall. This makes it possible for the student to then present their work to the class and answer any questions that arise, making it easier for the students to learn from each other. Likewise, currently, if I want to do a demonstration for the class, or to show the details of something, I need to either go around and do it table to table, which is really inefficient, or do it whole class, and run the risk that most student really can't see.

I know this technology will improve my students skills in many ways.

They will engage more in demonstrations and explanations because they can actually see more clearly. They will also build better listening skills because they will be able to follow along easier and ask better questions. It will also add to our sense of community as we all will be learning from each other... This list will go on and on. I have wanted one of these cameras for a really long time for so many reasons.
