My Students

My refugee students come to me curious and eager to learn English. But learning English from scratch can be daunting and exhausting. I want to provide these students interesting and fun ways that will keep them enthusiastic and motivated to learn throughout the year.

These middle-school aged students come from all over the world.

They come with their families as refugees from war, persecution, involuntary displacement, and a variety of other reasons. Yet despite their personal upheaval, they come to class prepared to work hard and adjust to everything new around them.

My Project

The purchase of a digital camera that comes equipped with batteries, memory card, and carrying case would free many of my tongue-tied ESL students who want to tell me what they're thinking and learning during the school day but aren't yet linguistically able to. (A accompanying purchased Protection Plan would safeguard against unintentional accidents.) A student from Kenya, for example, could take pictures of cafeteria activity during his lunchtime and share them with the rest of us when he gets back to the classroom. From these pictures which he uploads to the classroom computer and projects onto a screen, he and his classmates could learn and talk about critical new vocabulary (lunch line, tray, cafeteria worker, cheeseburger). His pictures could also prompt further discussion about what's going on in this American setting. With the purchase of the battery charger, he could charge the camera's batteries so that the camera will be ready to use by a classmate the next day.

Receiving a digital camera as a means for self expression will motivate and bring joy to my classroom of diverse learners.

The photos which they take can be displayed in a myriad of ways: as hard copies in the classroom, as digital files on our school page, and on our computers for future reference and presentations. I know my students will find this opportunity to integrate this kind of technology into their lives both meaningful and inspiring.
