Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We are a vibrant Special Education High School community with students' special needs and some with severe multiple disabilities. Students twelve to twenty-one years old and their families live in the heart of Harlem, New York, or surrounding neighborhoods. Over half of the student population are English as New Learners (ENLs).

One of our greatest challenges is bringing classroom resources to our special needs schools that require a multi-sensory approach for their educational needs.

Our goal is to ensure every student has sufficient opportunity to create work in the classroom via the computer. Many of our students live in shelters and some do not have access to computers due to finances. To communicate with families and provide students with current technology I require a device that allows me to use new technology and up-to-date resources. I am not able to incorporate and create the lessons the students need to keep up with their 21st-century curriculum. When you have students living in the heart of Harlem, you realize they need to persevere through obstacles and discover their strengths.

My Project

I need a computer with an up-to-date operating system to work with students on special projects. We also communicate regularly with the families and upload lessons to the Classroom website. The students will be able to interact with Classroom staff and assist with creating visuals for monthly themes.

My students are classified as Autistic and require multiple forms of learning.

Their preferred means of communication need multi-sensory information that I would be able to produce utilizing computerized technology. The touch screen HP is a necessary component as many of the students have difficulty with grasping devices.
