My Students

The students in our pre-kindergarten through second grade primary school are amazing, unique individuals! Each come with their own stories, gifts and perspectives. As a Speech Language Pathologist (SLP), it is a pleasure to help up to 40 of our students each year unfold their stories as they learn to communicate effectively and clearly.

Vocabulary is the foundation for learning language.

Research shows that vocabulary strongly correlates to reading comprehension, intelligence, and general ability. A typical 6 year old is using about 2,400 words and can comprehend 22,000 words on average. The expressive and receptive vocabulary skills of many of the students I work with fall well below average.

My Project

The vocabulary flashcards and vocabulary rich stories will provide opportunities for students to be exposed to, learn and use new and creative words to communicate about the world around them. The variety of words can be used to build stronger sentences and stories (both spoken and written). The sight word steps will be used to get the kids up and moving around the room and engage their whole body while using and manipulating words.

Your generous donation to our project will improve our students vocabulary repertoire which will build stronger readers and writers.

Our students who struggle with vocabulary based concepts need opportunities to be exposed to and engage with new words every day. Your donation will help facilitate those opportunities.
