Research has shown that young people determine their attitude about handling money by the time that finish 5th grade. So, it is imperative that conversations about financial literacy happens in my classroom and that the conversations happens often. An iPad with financial literacy apps is needed.
I am privileged to teach an awesome group of 6th graders.
They are self-motivated, eager to learn, and it's inevitable that they will do great things in life. A lot of them come from low socioeconomic households and in many cases, they will be the first in their family to graduate from college. I admire my scholars for their determination to do and be all that they are capable of doing and becoming!!
Having this resource in my classroom will have a huge impact of my scholars' future! The research that I read about youth and financial literacy is startling. Only 32% of American parents talk to their children regularly about personal finance. Only 7% of parents say that their child understands financial matters well. This data is not promising. This data does not put me at ease when I think that this generation will be the ones responsible for making financial decisions for our country. With this resource, along with apps such as "Unleash the Loot" and "Saving Spree", I can do my part to develop scholars who will grow to be financially responsible adults!
Financial literacy among individuals results in more stable communities.
Improved financial literacy, particularly early in life, results in a higher standard of living over the long term, including retirement. My role as an educator is to impact the "whole child". Not only will they leave my classroom more academically fit than they were when they entered my class, but it is also my hope that my scholars are more financially fit as well!!
