Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach special education US History for my incredibly diverse population of students. This group of young people work incredibly hard despite their challenges. Their eyes light up when they figure something out and they are excited when they learn new things.

Most of my students are receiving free lunch, meaning they live at or below poverty level; many have parents who speak a foreign language at home and are first generation citizens.

Because of their diversity, it is important that we work together to create a cohesive classroom.

I teach at the largest high school in my state. With over 3500 students, we are across 2 campuses and have the opportunity to give the students a wide variety of electives and sports opportunities.

I am also the coach of the wrestling team as well as a strength and conditioning mentor. I work with the various sports teams in the weight room all year and coach wrestling in the winter season. We have 30 wrestlers and over 600 varsity athletes in our school who use the weight room.

My Project

My students are reading at a 3rd or 4th grade reading level and we need some appropriate books about U.S. History to read in class. I have selected an assortment of texts that are age and reading level appropriate.

The first book is "George vs.

George" and it is an interactive book about the Revolutionary War from both sides of the ocean; this book is at a grade 4 reading level and we can read it together in class. I am requesting a classroom set [12 copies]. This will coordinate with our discussions about how the war affected both groups.

The rest of the books are a single copy of grade 4 level books on the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, WWII, Lewis and Clark, the Boston Tea Party, etc. Some of these texts are just written as a short narrative. Others are from the "You Wouldn't Want to Be..." series where they take the approach of why it would have been difficult being at these historical events.

Thank you so much for choosing my project and thanks for helping to fill every shelf.
