Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Given that children who have been abandoned, orphaned, abused, or neglected usually have few personal keepsakes, the purpose of the portraits is to provide them with a special memory of their youth, to honor their heritage and identity, and to help them build a positive self-image.

I teach visual arts (grades 7-12) in a city high school in NY.

My school serves a very diverse and poverty stricken population. Our students face struggles at home and in their community each and every day. They come from broken and violent homes, yet they have such a passion for helping others who are in need. Unfortunately, the problem-students and their negative actions are in the public eye far more often than the positive things our good students are involved in. I have a very talented group of student-artists and my goal is to teach them that they can do good things with their art--not only in class, but in their community. Despite the fact that 90% of my students are poverty-stricken, they still have a great interest in doing good things for their community and for those who are even less fortunate than themselves. This project gives them the opportunity to make a connection with another child who may be less fortunate than themselves and to make a positive impact in their lives.

My Project

Two years ago, I exposed my advanced art class to The Memory Project. This was also my first time participating in the program, which in addition to the supplies, costs $15 per orphan. My students were so excited about the project; attendance went up and they were even coming in during lunch and after school to work on the portraits of their orphans. They were so proud of the portraits they had made and some even received thank you letters, poems, and drawings, in return from their orphans. Most of the students said it was most valuable experience they ever had. The next year, a student, who had taken part in the project, came into my art room to ask me if my current students would be participating. He shared that his girlfriend had just given birth to their son, which he named "Adrian" after the orphan he had spent so many hours looking at and drawing the year before. He said that he was so inspired by the experience that he wanted to honor the orphan by naming his son after him.

We need art supplies to create the portraits for the orphans.
