My students need a start up lacrosse kit for our new, expanding boys lacrosse team. Access to vital equipment like lacrosse sticks and proper safety equipment like backstops are vital.

My Students
My students are wonderful, bright, curious middle schoolers thriving in an advanced academic program. My student population is a highly diverse one from many ethnic backgrounds. In the classroom their diverse cultural backgrounds help in the exchange of ideas making their educational experiences rich and rewarding. They gain an appreciation of their own backgrounds and others which strengthens their relations with each other. We are always looking for ways to allow them to be exposed and appreciate one another.
These relationships allow them to share their interests beyond the classroom.
My Project
We started a school lacrosse team and it caught on quickly. Lacrosse is the fastest growing sport in the country, but it has an almost non-existent presence in the urban landscape of sports. We want to continue to expose our students to this popular sport and give them a chance to expand to expand their opportunities to sports that are limited in this area. Not all urban kids should be limited to the stereotype of the urban sport experience - mainly basketball.
In addition to the introduction of this great sport, we will also tie in Native American history education since this is where the sport gets its roots.
By being part of a lacrosse team, our students are exposed to
- solid friendship and camaraderie
- cooperation and teamwork skills
- leadership skills
- appreciation of different abilities
- respect for team mates/ opponents/officials
- a sense of belonging/team membership
- social interaction skills
- physical skills
- self-esteem and self concept
- team goal-setting skills
- self-discipline, patience and persistence
- resilience through sharing positive and negative experiences.
