Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember what it was like to chase a butterfly for the first time? Did you ever pick up a caterpillar in the park? Many of my students have never been to the suburbs and are lucky if they have ever seen a butterfly flying past their bus stop. You can help change that!

My class is made up of third graders in a New York public school who go home to houses, apartments or shelters with little to no materials to succeed in school.

My students want to do well and want to learn as much as they can, but barely have the resources to do so. These are children who live in a very low-income community, with 100% of students receiving free lunch. Part of the third grade science curriculum is to learn about various life cycles, but these children rarely have the opportunity to complete hands-on activities. This project will give my students the opportunity for interactive learning when it comes to the butterfly life cycle.

My Project

In order for my students to truly understand what it is like for a caterpillar to grow into a butterfly, they need to see it first-hand. By obtaining the resources to grow their own butterflies from caterpillars (butterfly larva kit), and the materials to document this process (the camera and the blank books), this will be the opportunity of a lifetime. Many years from now, these children will think back to their experiences in third grade, and will no doubt remember the best science experiment they ever did!

Your donation will allow all 27 students in this class to experience the joy of watching their very own caterpillars grow into beautiful butterflies.

But not only will the students watch their insects grow, they will also have the opportunity to record the entire process, from beginning to end. The students will take their own pictures and include them in their blank books. By the end of the project, they will see how they've grown as students and scientists during this amazing experience.
