My students LOVE to play INSTRUMENTS!
Our goal is TWO new xylophones.
I am the music teacher at an urban elementary school (K-6) in Indianapolis. This is my third year at IPS 37 and my goal is to use district and community resources to obtain enough quality instruments to have a fully-equipped music room. In my first two years, I've built a good foundation. This request would allow me to take the next step in establishing a QUALITY program.
The requested instruments are NOT band or orchestra instruments, but instruments for the general music program for grades K-6. EVERY student in our school (approx. 315) will be able to use these instruments. Each classroom comes to music twice a week for 30 minutes. I am trying to get enough instruments to serve a moderate-sized classroom (25-30 students) so that the PUPIL to INSTRUMENT ratio is approximately 2:1. Of course, it would be wonderful if EVERY student had an instrument, but an important first step will be the 2:1 ratio.
"Best Practice" for elementary music calls for a hands-on music curriculum. One well-known method is the Orff approach. An Orff approach (created by Carl Orff) to music education includes opportunities of music expression, where speech, song, movement, improvisation, and instruments are the vehicles used to experience and learn about music. XYLOPHONES are the foundation of the instrumentarium. Phase 1 (funded) provided us with 2 additional quality xylophones. Phase 2 and this proposal, Phase 3 will get us to the next step in our long-range plan.
I have finished my Level II Orff certification and will be taking Level III this summer. I am committed to building a quality music program. Student engagement is the key to learning. When students have a lot of "waiting their turn to play", engagement is destroyed. Having enough instruments will provide me with the tools I need to make it happen.
