Urban Gardening at All Girls School

Help me give my students the tools and materials they will need to get their urban garden off the ground. Grow lights, heat mats, and seedling trays will allow our students to see the growth of various plants.

My Students

The girls at our school come from everywhere. From Mali to the Dominican Republic and everywhere in between, they cross oceans and continents to find themselves in our classrooms in New York City. They are bright, diverse, fierce, proud and they are hungry for opportunity.

As an unscreened, Title One school, many of our students come to us far below grade level in math and reading.

They struggle with learning and behavioral disabilities, traveling from communities that commonly experience violence or crime or from single parent households that are almost always run by devoted mothers who want nothing but the best for their daughters.

Many of our girls are eager to experience success. It's up to our school's team of educators, counselors, administrators and other school staff to provide the tools, materials and other supports necessary for each young woman to reach her full potential.

My Project

Many of our students have never considered where our food comes from or how it connects to our greater health over all. After being assigned a plot of land in partnership with the Battery Park Conservancy, our students are ready to get down and dirty to learn where our food comes from.

Creating a garden in our very own community will give students an opportunity to get hands on with nature in ways many of them have never experienced before.

From setting up an ideal environment with proper light and warmth, to watching plants transition from seedlings to mature plants, our students will engage with science and nutrition in valuable ways that matter to their education and their personal health.
