Urban Farming Comes

My Project

Last year, my students dipped their toes into the world of hydroponics by growing lettuce to feed our school community. They were amazed by the amount of food we were able to grow from one hydroponic tower garden. Last year's hydroponics investigation was such a positive experience, this school year they have begun asking, "What else can we grow? How can we explore aquaponics?"

I would like to help my students explore these questions by getting materials to begin growing fruiting plants in our current system and analyzing a small-scale aquaponic system to inspire ideas to build our own larger system.

By gaining a better understanding of how alternative farming methods work, we hope to inspire the students to try finding possible solutions for food inequality in specific communities.

The games and tinker projects included will help build math fluency and depth of understanding for electricity and engineering on days when we are not working on the project. By having strong science and arithmetic concepts, students will be able to calculate and interpret changes in nutrient levels, pH levels, and perform maintenance on all equipment.
