About My Students

I teach in a large, urban, public high school where students take 7 classes a day in what is called a "college preparatory" curriculum. My students come from incredibly diverse backgrounds and possess equally varied academic skill levels; but all are expected to perform equally well academically.

My students come to school with a tremendous amount of "baggage": emotional issues, family issues, financial worry that makes it difficult for them to focus on what should be their primary mission in school, that of receiving a quality education. I teach in a Title I school in an urban setting which means the majority of our students are minorities and low income. Many are first and second generation immigrants to this country. They do have one thing in common: the desire to succeed. However, they come to school with financial, emotional, and family burdens that make it difficult for them to focus solely on their academics as is possible with the case of their more affluent peers. My goal is to help them better bear the burden of the extra "baggage" they carry and find success in their efforts, faith in themselves, and open doors to opportunities for them to enter.

Archery teaches patience and focus-skills that our students need in everything they do. Archery allows students to compete in a sport that is not dependent upon body shape or size. Archery is a sport in which all can compete equally- it is a sport of the mind. Just like anything in life, one needs targets and goals. As I teach my students the principles of leadership, the importance of goal setting, and the patience and dedication necessary to achieve those goals, we also need physical targets for our arrows to hit the mark. The motto of NASP is "Changing Lives one Arrow at a Time" and I believe it is making a vast difference in the lives of my students. I have been blessed to see the positive impact on the lives of my students both academically and personally.

In Their Own Words

Kids like me come to school stressed out and worried about family situations, work, and school. When archery practice starts its an opportunity for all of us students who come in all shapes, sizes and colors to throw all of that stress out the window. Like everything in life to be a success takes hard-work and dedication. Last year we accomplished our goal of qualifying for NASP National Competition. At Nationals when we competed we did so well that we were only a few points from qualifying for World Competition, which I didn't even know existed. Our next goal is to shoot for the stars and get our team to the World tournament. I truly believe in us and our commitment, hard-work, and can-do attitude. I know we can accomplish any goal we set for ourselves through practice, team-both at school and in our lives.

I am a leader by showing the rest of the students that we take charge by organizing various fundraisers and writing grants to help find generous people to help us. I have learned to let my voice be heard and tell my personal story; that it is possible to find resources and people to assist us in reaching our goals. I will also teach my team mates that they can take initiative and they can "reach for the stars" wile finding success along the way. I also teach our new team members how to use our equipment safely and lead team building and bonding activities so we learn to identify common goals, practice the necessary team work to find success not only for each individual but for the team as a whole both in archery competition and in our school and personal lives. I will offer guidance and emotional support to help everyone learn, improve and find success in life

This project is important to us because we have so many people who want to be a part of archery that we are always in need of more equipment. Archery at our school receives no funding from the school so we have to completely support ourselves. Archery brings a lot of diversity to the school scene, not only in its participants in our school, but also to the competitive playing field. Each competition is like a cultural exchange when we get to know the students from all of the other schools. We get to meet people from all types of communities not just us from the "big city". Through archery us city kids get to learn about and to experience the joy of the great outdoors and the beauty of being in nature. We need more equipment so everyone can practice and improve because its hard to put forth your best effort and stay focused while waiting to share equipment.
