My Students

My students, currently, are working on English in the classroom and not branching out into other curricular areas. The history teacher has asked if there is a way to bring together the two core subject areas to better provide educational resources to the students.

My students enjoy various levels of activity.

My students are primarily from higher than average poverty levels and a majority of the students receive free and reduced-lunch services. The students often join two or three organizations or activities throughout the school year, and the students are often seen in organizations outside the school environment, as well. This year, the school has worked to provide more technology resources for student use, and the students have shown an increased interest in both technology and real-life applications of learning.

My Project

If the students receive the novels, they will be able to work with both the English and history classrooms to create a cross-curricular assignment. In the English classroom, the students will work to read and critically analyze the work with emphasis on vocabulary and literary elements. In the history classroom, the students will work to identify common elements of historical fact from the time period and can create timelines and interactive projects to help history come alive. The final project will be a joint venture that involves an oral presentation to fulfill English requirements and a written component to fulfill both English and history requirements.

It is very challenging to meet all the requirements of the modern classroom and still have funding available for novels.

By incorporating this novel into two classrooms, the payoff will be evident in the potential to change perspectives of the students. Nebraska is a very large cattle state and many students do not know how far worker conditions have come in part due to the work of Upton Sinclair.
