Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My seventh and eighth-grade students are an exuberant bunch of teens who love to socialize and have fun. My students are diversity personified from painfully shy to audacious, from studious to silly, from spoiled to neglected, from being treasured to experiencing trauma.

The pandemic has hit them hard: their natural exuberance has taken a hit because they are isolated from their friends and teachers.

Many of them are developing anxieties that may potentially take years to overcome. Getting back to normal can't come soon enough—we need to mitigate the learning loss and social isolation they are currently experiencing. Unfortunately, many of them have lost close family members to COVID and are struggling with grief as well. Although I can't solve these problems, I can do my very best to provide my students with learning opportunities that will excite them and allow them to focus on better days ahead.

My Project

My students are great, but after a year of distance learning, their motivation has dipped to record lows. When we return to school in the fall, I want to encourage them to participate and engage in class at the highest level—and who doesn't work a little harder when there's a prize involved? I know that when I attend training, compete in Kahoot, or participate in surveys, I am much more invested in it when there's the lure of a prize or gift card, and kids are no different.

When we play games and there's no prize for the winner, many students choose to opt out, so I'm asking for gift cards that I can offer to students as rewards for their effort and participation.

Honestly, I think we'd have a much higher rate of achievement if we paid them for doing well in school. Whenever I tell students that going to school is their job, they respond by saying that it's not a job unless they are getting paid. Since their intrinsic motivation isn't always apparent, I'd like to dangle a gift-card carrot in front of them to motivate them to push themselves harder. I'm very interested to see how much of a difference gift cards can make for motivating underperforming students to rise to the occasion and push themselves harder. If you think this is a valuable experiment, we would certainly appreciate a donation. Thank you!
