Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are sixth-graders at an urban, bilingual school. My school is a special place and a community. Teachers and students alike are happy to be in school and are excited and eager to learn.

They love learning about the world we live in.

My Project

As a history teacher, it is also my job to teach geography. I've noticed that students enter my classroom with a very limited understanding of the world we live in. In order to understand and unpack history, it is important that students also understand where things happened and how their location impacted human development.

I want to have these "nontraditional" maps in my classroom to help students see that there is not only one way to see the world.

For this reason, I included an "up-side-down" map and a Pacific centered map. I also included several maps of Africa because, while humans originated in Africa, I find it is the country that most Americans today know the least about.
