Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Greetings! I am a Teach for America Corps Member working for a school district in an urban part of Texas. I teach self-contained (all subjects) 3rd grade, and this year I will be the 3rd grade “Team Leader” on our campus. The following conversation actually occurred in my classroom during the 2007-2008 school year. Teacher: "Boys and girls, today we are going to be talking about elections." (Teacher displays pictures of the various candidates running for president that have been cut out of a newspaper; one student looks confused.) Teacher: "What's wrong?" Student: "Are all those people running for president?" Teacher: "Yes." (He stands up and points at the picture) Student: "Even that person?" Teacher: "Yes, that's United States Senator Barack Obama. He's running too." Student: "But Miss, black people can't be president!" Teacher: "They most certainly can be! We have a lot of work to do!" I was so concerned and disturbed by this interaction last year, that I wrote a DonorsChoose.org proposal for an amazing classroom resource, Time Magazine for Kids (TFK), and thankfully it was fully-funded. Time for Kids explains major news stories in a format that my students are interested in and can understand. I cannot convey to you in words truly how valuable this resource was for my students, and I made sure that my students each wrote a glowing letter of thanks to each generous donor. We learned so much about campaigns and elections in the United States. My students created an election board that had updated information about each candidate. While I was able to help my student learn about Barack Obama, I still have many more stories similar to the one above. In his case, he was particularly impressed that Barack Obama was able to be an African-American presidential candidate, even though, “like me, he didn’t have a daddy either.” Like him, most of my students have virtually no background knowledge about the world they live in and what occurs in it. Our current social studies textbook is older than my students and virtually useless in the classroom. My students need and deserve better social studies instruction to be well-informed citizens, and also to prepare for high-stakes standardized tests that often focus on non-fiction reading passages. They were able to find just what they deserved in TFK. We learned about so much more than just elections this year. My students read about how J.K Rowling got the idea for “Harry Potter,” the effects of global warming on animals, child labor in India, poverty in Africa, and so much more. I honestly cannot imagine teaching without this resource this year! To help my students, I need your help. I would like to have a class set (30 subscriptions) of "Time Magazine for Kids" to use in my classroom weekly, as well as an almanac and atlas for research purposes. The magazine has activities that overlap all subject areas, contain current events, and help students practice reading non-fiction text. This year, the magazine will also offer special election features, which will be very helpful as I am working on a 3rd grade election unit and project. With the 30 issues, I will also rotate the various TFK issues with the 6 other 3rd grade classes on our campus, so the resource will be used by roughly 130 students. In closing, the conversation with my student about elections did two things. First, it broke my heart that his background knowledge told him that people who share his skin color could not be president. Secondly, it made me even more determined to help the students I serve understand that anything is possible with hard work and determination. Thank you for your time.
