I teach a 4th grade class with diverse educational levels and abilities. Over half of my class of students come from lower economic homes. This class is starting to progress and grow their reading skills. I have a mix of students at a variety of levels.
Fifty-five percent of my students have started the year below benchmark levels in reading.
This is a lower class than many I have worked with. They need time reading texts that they are motivated to read.
Our class is working very hard at making growth as we redo our curriculum pieces to focus more on non-fiction. My 15 boys and 10 girls are excited for new opportunities to read! I love these students but they need opportunities to love books!
My Project
Have you ever been in a 4th grade classroom library and couldn't find something to read? My kids are pleading for a newer, updated library to motivate them to love books! Returning to teaching a couple years ago, I inherited an ancient library which I seek to rebuild. Last year I made some small gains with a Donors Choice grant. Boxes came in the mail and my students celebrated like it was Christmas! New books were snatched up like hot cakes. The series of books were carefully chosen to provide diverse reading options including picture books that will be used to teach reading skills as mentor texts. My class and I can't wait to get started!
