My Students

The best part of the school year, according to many students, is the week they participated in Hour of Code. The teachers would agree! When learning to program, students of all ability levels were able to move at their own pace and succeed at various logical tasks. We want to build upon these wins!

We are a high-progress, Blue Ribbon, award-winning school with a nationally distinguished principal and amazing teachers who have been recognized as well.

One teacher won BP Teacher of the Year, while another is a distinguished Microsoft Partners in Learning educator. Most of our teachers have master's degrees or participate in professional development workshops and conferences that bring fresh ideas to teaching. Through this great team, we are able to serve the diverse needs of our students. We are ranked as a high-poverty school and are challenged by our rural, Alaskan setting, which offers many outdoor learning opportunities, but lacks opportunities typically associated with larger communities. We have a large itinerant population of students who come to our town from bush villages while their parents attend a local trade school. We have much going for us, and yet we know there is more we need to do to become a state-of-the-art 21st century school with progressive teaching tools.

My Project

We can become a 21st century elementary school with your help. How? To begin with, we need the right tools in our teachers' and students' hands to bring lessons to life through connected learning, which harnesses us to the advances and innovations of our digital age. The basics of learning such as reading, writing, and arithmetic are important and will always provide the foundation, but developing lifelong learners with higher-order thinking skills through challenging, tech-based activities will help our youth thrive in this rapidly-changing world. What are these tools? The hardware we seek includes Chromebooks, a 3D printer with software and filament, web cameras, document cameras, and mp3 players. With these powerful items, students can explore computer science through programming apps & websites on the Chromebooks, create 3D-printed objects, see how classrooms around the world are learning with web cameras, and use document cameras to share work & labs with each other.

With these new tools, our teachers can offer more opportunities to each and every student year after year.

The impact is huge. Not only will these tools enrich classroom learning, but they will improve communication with families, the local community, and schools anywhere in the world. Similarly, student free time potentially becomes more productive. For example, instead of playing computer games, students will be able to program computer games. Your gift of technology will improve education!
