Up Close Look at Science: Using Microscopes to Wow Students

My students need 4 microscopes to view objects that we are learning about in class/lab with magnification. Currently, we only have 1 simple, durable microscope for use in the classroom.

My Students

Sometimes I just want my students to exit my class saying "that was cool!" or "you won't believe what we got to look at in science!" It would be nice to have some additional equipment that helps me "wow" and inspire my students into just enjoying the process of learning and scientific discovery.

Most of my students need all the motivation to learn as they can get.

My 7th graders come from challenging circumstances and a distressed community. They arrive at school needing a push in the right direction. Unfortunately, it often feels like the only stable thing students get is a push for them to perform well on standardized tests. Developing a sense of excitement about learning sometimes get diluted or sidetracked. But these 12 and 13 year olds deserve a chance at school to excel and to get excited about learning. My limited science budget does lend itself to extra equipment that would help motivate these students to want to learn more, see more, and understand more.

My Project

My students are fascinated with viewing objects and specimens that we are learning about in class under magnification. This excites them! Unfortunately, I only have one easy to use, durable microscope to use in the classroom. 25 students can't huddle around 1 microscope to see a mayfly's gills or the mineral crystals of granite. I would like enough microscopes for 1 per table. Brock Magiscopes are easy to use/focus - I don't want students spending more time focusing something than actually seeing it. Viewing objects up close would reinforce information taught in class by offering an incredible visual to our concepts. It would be much better than a textbook photo or website. Reading or hearing about spores being on a fern for reproduction purposes would be better understood if they could see it for themselves. It would always be a better "wow" to inspire them to want to learn more, check out other things, and have fun.

I worry that my students are not getting the chance to actually enjoy the learning experience and sense of discovery.

So I need to do all that I can and have the necessary equipment to get my students to think about how cool learning can be, one discovery at a time, in as many labs as I can. Having this equipment would make a huge impact.
