Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Students need real world challenges. They need to meet the future head on. My students are reaching out of this world. They will launch weather balloons into the ozone layer to learn about weather conditions up there. They will also see our world from space with the amazing pictures they will get.

We are a science based high school in Arizona.

Our school is inner-city and many of our students will be first generation college students. My students are smart and hardworking. Most of the students are enrolled in our astronomy class. They are very excited about the challenge of launching weather balloons into 'near-space'. Most of these students are aspiring to be engineers or scientists and this is an amazing hands-on opportunity for them to be involved with. Our students are also very community oriented and are looking for ways to use our balloon technology to assist in our neighborhoods. One of their goals is to photograph the neighborhood from above and study urban blight.

My Project

We will be launching high altitude weather balloons nearly 20 miles above the earth's surface (100,000ft). This is well into the ozone layer. It is referred to as 'near-space'. From this height you can see the darkness of space and the curvature of the earth. Students will feel like NASA engineers launching a satellite into space. They will even track it and recover their payload miles away. They will gain a tremendous sense of pride and accomplishment in completing this feat. This can really boost their confidence and cause them to dream even bigger. We want them to be ready to meet the challenges of tomorrow. The ozone layer is a good place to start. The camera will allow them to document their trip and photograph the earth from 'space'. This is a quality camera and the right one for the job. They will also be able to measure the change in temperature as it drops below any temperature found on the surface of earth. Pretty amazing stuff.

This is an amazing project for my students to participate in.

Besides studying the atmosphere for class purposes, we also plan to invite middle school students on launches. This allows the students to reach out and teach others. The students are also planning to use our balloon camera for the good of our community. Students want to document urban blight in our school (inner-city) neighborhood. This can be shared with city developers in hopes of helping to bring improvement to the community.
