My Project

The stress is REAL! One way to provide a break is a maker space. Maker spaces have become a popular element in school libraries. Maker spaces are a DIY area where students can design and create objects. It often utilized high-tech elements like 3D printers, but our library emphasizes traditional hands-on arts & crafts so that students can “unplug” and take a mindful moment. Maker spaces provide an excellent opportunity for creative and purposeful expression and provide a lot of fun doing it!

The power behind maker spaces is the ability for students to be creative as they build and express themselves as well as the opportunity to relax with friends, in a calm, supportive space.

This grant will provide the crafting raw materials for activities that can be collaborative or individual. Our library has a team of volunteer students--the Library Squad--that act as helpers. One of the ways Library Squad members help is in decorating the library. Once they learn a craft, such as making paper mache flowers or diffusing paper leaves, they lead crafting sessions for other students during lunch break. These collective efforts freshen up the library windows, doors, and bulletin boards and help to establish a welcoming space. But, sometimes, a student needs a solo activity to destress and refresh. This grant will provide high-interest coloring and dot-to-dot activities with high teen appeal. Teens truly enjoy the opportunity to craft something beautiful, where the process AND the product are the point. Both these approaches put students in a supportive space, providing opportunities for self-care while connecting with students and library staff.
