My Project

I love my students for their resilience, determination, and eagerness to learn, despite the many challenges they face. They are high school students with multiple disabilities from low-income families, each with unique strengths and untapped potential. Every day, they teach me how to fight through life’s struggles with courage and perseverance. Their disabilities do not define them- they are capable, driven, and eager to grow. However, many struggle with functional literacy, meaning they face difficulties with essential real-world skills such as reading signs, managing money, and following directions—skills critical for independent living.

I entered this field because I deeply believe that functional literacy is a right, not a privilege for students with disabilities.

With a background in education policy analysis and research, I am committed to finding innovative ways to bridge the gap between technology and learning so my students can thrive. The Department of Education has provided iPads, but that is not enough. My students need fast chargers, headphones, and other essential tools to fully utilize technology for their learning and daily life skills.

More importantly, I want to educate their families, empowering parents to support their children's learning at home. Many parents are unsure how to help their children with special needs, and I want to change that. By guiding them to observe and engage with their child’s learning, I hope to empower families to recognize their children's potential and never give up on them.

With your support, my students will have fully charged iPads, clear audio support, and structured learning experiences. This project will not only enhance their functional literacy but also foster independence and confidence in both students and their families.
