Unlocking Literacy: Orton-Gillingham Training for Tomorrow's Leaders

My Project

Investing in Orton-Gillingham professional development will significantly enhance my ability to support all students in their reading journeys, particularly those who struggle with decoding, fluency, and comprehension. Even in third grade, students struggle with phonics and therefore need added support when moving from the "learning to read" to "reading to learn". This is a piviotal year for the shift in students' needs. OG is a structured, multisensory approach to literacy instruction that is research-based and designed to meet the needs of diverse learners. By deepening my understanding of phonemic awareness, phonics, and structured literacy strategies, I will be better equipped to deliver explicit, systematic instruction that reaches every student, regardless of their reading ability.

Through this training, I will develop a toolkit of multisensory strategies that engage students in hands-on, interactive learning.

I will incorporate techniques such as tactile letter formation, visual word mapping, and kinesthetic activities to make reading instruction more engaging and effective. These approaches will help students make meaningful connections between sounds, letters, and words, ultimately strengthening their reading skills and confidence. Additionally, I will be able to differentiate instruction more effectively, ensuring that struggling readers receive targeted interventions while advanced readers continue to grow, which is directly connected to my educational philosophy as an eighteenth year vereran elementary educator.

The knowledge I gain from this professional development will directly impact my students by providing them with research-backed reading instruction tailored to their needs. Whether working with small groups, delivering whole-class instruction, or providing one-on-one interventions, I will apply what I’ve learned to create a literacy-rich classroom environment where all students can thrive. My goal is to empower my students with the skills they need to become confident, lifelong readers, and this professional development will be a crucial step in making that vision a reality.
