Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Research has consistently shown that hands-on, interactive learning experiences greatly enhance students' understanding and retention of these essential skills. Being in an alternative school where students have diverse learning challenges means being creative in your instruction.

Unfortunately, many of our students face challenges in acquiring proficient reading skills due to various factors such as learning disabilities, language barriers, and socioeconomic disadvantages.

To address these challenges, I would like to implement the use of manipulatives specifically designed to support the science of reading. For this project, I am focusing on

Phonemic Awareness manipulatives, which will help students learn to identify and manipulate individual sounds in words, facilitating the development of phonemic awareness skills crucial for phonics instruction, and Phonics Manipulatives which will include interactive materials in the sets such as letter tiles, segmenting trays, and word-building kits that will enable students to practice decoding and blending skills, reinforcing their understanding of letter-sound relationships.

The reading essentials toolkit, phonics set and other manipulatives will be used both in daily small group work, but also in independent center work. By integrating these manipulatives into our literacy curriculum, we aim to create engaging, multi-sensory learning experiences that cater to our students' diverse learning needs. These hands-on tools will not only support struggling readers, but also enrich the literacy instruction of all students, while fostering a culture of literacy proficiency.
