My Project

Every year I always have at least one student who is fascinated with geography. They study maps and share facts that no one else knows. They show a motivation and engagement which is not always seen in other areas in the curriculum. And these students are also the ones who might miss the opportunity to develop their geography and critical thinking skills in the classroom because they are pulled for speech, or math, reading and/or writing intervention.

The United States does not seem to emphasize geography as much as other parts of the world and this is a shame.

Geography is important or students because it helps them understand the world around them and to foster a global interconnectedness despite the fact that the United States can be construed as a very large "island."

The geography materials (blank maps, flash cards, board and card games) will not only teach content, but also develop critical thinking skills on how geographic features influence a region's culture and way of life. In our reality of climate change, geography also teaches students about natural phenomena like climate patterns, ecosystems and natural disasters.

The strategy games (vocabulary and chess) are not only fun to play, but also develop ones critical thinking skills. This project is for all my students and in particular, my future cartographers, Urban planners, Environmental Consultants, Conservationists, etc.

Studying geography is important in school and this project honors this passion!
