My Students

In the light of recent tragic events, my students bring about hope for a better future. While they hail from all over the globe, speak a multitude of different languages and come from a wide array of economic situations, they work together in unity. Through playing in a band together they learn the values of teamwork, tolerance, understanding and loyalty. We see our wonderful diversity as an asset and a strength. I can only hope that they can carry this notion of setting aside differences to achieve unity into the future.

My students are energetic, determined and love to share their musical gifts with the school and local community.

They are truly a joy to behold.

My Project

Prior to this year, the only students who received musical instruction at our school were those who were in our performance (band and chorus) classes. This year we are will be offering general music in addition to our performance-based courses. To maintain student interest and motivation, the nature of these courses will be heavily hands-on so that the children will be immersed in authentic musical learning experiences.

Our general music course will trace how drumming from West Africa influenced the popular musical styles of Latin America, the Caribbean and the Untied States.

The drum pads will be used to cover Home Depot paint buckets, which we will use until we can obtain funding for a full class set of drums. The shakers, shekere and tubano will add to our small, but growing arsenal of world music percussion equipment. Thank you for taking the time to read and consider our request. It is our sincere hope that through the teaching of world music we can help our students build a more just and compassionate society.
