My Students
George R.R. Martin said, "We read fantasy to find the colors again... To taste strong spices and hear the songs the sirens sang. There is something old and true in fantasy that speaks to something deep within us."
My students are a group of developing readers from a small sub-rural high school in Michigan.
They want to explore the worlds beyond their own in a truly authentic way, and with their new-found love of reading, they understand that this kind of battle is possible through the imaginary rehearsals found in books!
My Project
My students will use these books as a part of their independent reading goals in sophomore English. The goal is for each students to read at least 25 books during the school year. The challenge is for them to read from a variety of genres, both their favorites and ones that might stretch them as readers. The fantasy and science fiction titles will support all students in finding something they can latch on to read.
The goal of 25 books can seem like a lofty one for many sophomores, with after-school clubs, sports, and household chores, but building the habits of life-long reading extends beyond the constraints of time management to support them far beyond their school years.
