This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

As a Bronx-based School Social Worker, I have been given the opportunity to build strong relationships with our students and school staff. It is not hard to notice that our teachers are extremely passionate about the work that they do with our students. Our students seek us for guidance and understanding, not just academically but emotionally, and we would like to ensure that we are prepared to provide our students with a variety of strategies to navigate their emotions.

It is my intention to help create a school community where the social emotional health of our students is nurtured just as much as their academic potential.

Our students deserve a safe space where they can express how they are feeling, both vocally and through movement. We are currently moving into a new building. We will have extra space and with your donations, will create an environment where students and their families can reinvent a new, healthy way of expression.

This yoga & mindfulness practice will help our students build self-awareness, confidence, strengthen their social relationships and channel any difficult emotions in a healthy manner. These materials will help students practice conscious breath work and yoga skills in an effort to improve their academic performance and emotional regulation. Data shows that mindfulness based practices also reduce anxiety and increase attention. Both yoga & mindfulness aim to quiet the mind in order to cultivate a deeper connection to and understanding of the self. This space will be open not just for our students to practice but also their families. As the School Social Worker and certified school-based yoga & mindfulness instructor, I will hold space and be prepared to creatively teach yoga and mindfulness.
