This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach an amazing group of second grade scholars in a public school in the South Bronx. While the past year of education has been disrupted due COVID-19, this particular group of scholars (and their families!) have been consistent in their commitment to education. They are self-disciplined, curious and kind - and it is them, the second grade scholars at PS 277, who have given me a clear purpose during what has been the most challenging year of my teaching career.

My Project

Due to COVID-19 I find myself teaching math for the first time in a second grade classroom and it has been as much a learning experience for me, as it has been for the students! It did not surprise me when I realized that teaching math, just like teaching early reading and literacy skills, needs to be hands on and engaging. Students need to touch, experience and learn through manipulation of materials in order to gain a deeper understanding of mathematical concepts.

The use of manipulatives in my second grade math class helps students hone their mathematical thinking skills.

Through the effective use of manipulatives in daily math instruction my students can better connect ideas and integrate their knowledge of place value and other mathematical concepts. That is why I have put together a DonorsChoose Package of hands on materials - from place value charts and number lines, to base ten blocks and hide-away cards that I believe will allow my students to do just this.
