Help Mrs. Allred

I teach in a dynamic inner-city elementary school, where despite the poverty in their surroundings, most students seem interested and eager to learn.

Many students come to school without a great deal of background knowledge in science. They do not understand simple machines, for instance. They have read about them in our textbooks but do not understand how they apply to their own lives. This is a shame, because simple machines form the foundation of many of the tools and machines we use daily. The boys and girls need this basic understanding in order to build more complex scientific knowledge.

I am requesting science books about simple machines and some real models of the machines. I am also requesting a kit where the boys and girls can make their own simple machines. They can use these materials to experiment with moving or picking up objects.

The hands-on experience of using these simple machines will help build some very important basic information my students need. You will make it possible for my students to become interested and excited about science!
