Help me give my students a dystopian, coming-of-age novel, "The Giver" by Lois Lowry to give the joy of discovery, freedom of thought, and understanding of community and self-worth.

My Project

"The Giver" by Lois Lowry is a novel showing that a utopia, while apparently pleasing, is not all it's cracked up to be. My students and I will read this novel together, and analyze the concepts of community, the greater good, individual freedoms and choice, government control, and censorship.

Students will collaborate to create their own rules for a successful society based on what they learn in the novel and then write an essay comparing the dystopian society in the book to our modern world.

Together, we will learn the importance of self-thought, independent thinking, and accountability while mastering reading and writing standards and growing as lovers of books.
