My Students

My students are a diverse group of 7th and 8th graders who come from a variety of elementary schools from across our town, state and even the country! Entering intermediate school allows all the students to start fresh, build new relationships and have new experiences. This is especially true this year as many student's learning was disrupted due to the COVID-19 Pandemic.

My Project

As an English Language Arts teacher I feel it is important for my students to read stories that are not only entertaining, but that can teach them important messages. In working with students at a variety of reading levels it is important to select texts that can be accessible for all students. One way to do this is through the use of Graphic Novels which are an innovative way to approach serious topics. One such topic I teach in my classroom is the Japanese Incarceration that happened in the United States during World War II. Therefore I am requesting class sets of two different graphic novels that deal with this topic.

In speaking about the Japanese Incarceration the late Senator Daniel Inouye of Hawaii said, "The lessons learned must remain a grave reminder of what we must not allow to happen to any group.” I believe this quote exemplifies why it is important to teach our students about history.

This is why I often incorporate topics relating to history and social studies in my English Language Arts Classroom. By teaching about the Japanese Incarceration I hope my students will learn about the dangers of discrimination and importance of speaking up for what is right, topics which are particularly timely.

This summer I was lucky enough to participate in a program with the National Endowment for Humanities to study the Japanese Incarceration at Heart Mountain. In that course I was introduced to these graphic novels.

As my students adjust to coming back to school full time I know it will be important to use materials that are engaging to them so they can build their skills in reading that may have been lost over the last 18 months. I think these graphic novels will be very successful in doing so!
