Understanding Light, Physics, and Color Theory in Theatrical Design

Help me give my students materials necessary to learn about lighting design and form a solid foundation for related Physics in lighting design. Each item contributes to a station for experimenting with color theory lighting techniques and effects.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

To teach modern light design, students need to understand angles and color theory. Best practice is through hands on learning. The supplies in this project help set up work tables for student groups to learn about light: how to use lenses and prisms to change angles on stage, to witness a Skittle change colors right before their eyes by changing the gel frame--to establish mood and beauty on stage or an outdoor installation. The wooden figures offer a way for students to see how to create and avoid shadows on actors or objects; how to focus a light on the whole body, and see through experimentation, what happens when you do not. These workstations will help students create art with light.

Lighting Design is a wide open field of study in our modern world; we live in a time (because of cheaper LED lights) where theatrical lighting is everywhere: under bridges, on our sky scrapers, in our gardens, and on stage.

We hope to work with a local artist to learn about light installations, environmental design, to create an outdoor installation on our campus, and to build student independence and opportunity to design on our stage and others through classroom instruction, playing with light, and building a deeper understanding of the physics involved in designing with light.

Finally, by experimenting with the hands-on manipulatives, students will also develop a deeper understanding of Physics and Geometry. This unit of study will support challenging academics and provide a new art to our theatrical design students. Currently, only one student at a time can experiment and learn on a lighting board, by having these workstations, these supplies remove the funneling situation of waiting to take a turn on the light board, and in turn, provide a focused work station for the entire classroom.
