My students come from a variety of socio-economic, ability, and ethnic background. There are over twenty languages spoken at my school, but science can become a common language for all my scientists-in-training. The school is part of the International Baccalaureate program, which seeks to integrate multiple disciplines in order to provide a holistic learning environment for all students.
When taking the total budget given to the science department and calculating a budget per student, there are only $4 allotted per student for the entire year.
This fact makes it difficult to plan satisfying hands-on activities which engage all students and foster their love for learning. Any help received through this website would ensure students are exposed to multiple true learning opportunities which introduce students to STEAM - science, technology, engineering, arts and math.
My Project
My 8th grade students are expected to study Physics during the second part of their school year. However, there are limited supplies to help plan engaging labs and activities that enhance their learning experience. The supplies included in this project would ensure they have several opportunities to understand how light and optics work. As they complete the planned activities, students will build a lasting bridge between concepts found in their textbooks and real-life learning.
After completing the labs created using these resources, the students will create an original art piece which will incorporate their newly gained knowledge into a medium of their choice.
This will ensure that they did not simply memorize information, but rather understood key concepts and are able to incorporate them into something new.
