Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Access to Make Your Home Among Strangers will be a game-changer for my students! This novel offers a unique opportunity to dive into big themes like identity, culture, and the immigrant experience. As they explore the struggles and triumphs of the characters, students will sharpen their critical thinking skills, learning how to analyze literature more deeply while also engaging in important conversations about race, class, and belonging. This will enhance their writing and discussion skills, as well as enable them to gain a new perspective on what it means to find "home" in a world full of change.

What makes this project extra special is the diversity of my students.

Many come from immigrant or first-generation families, making the novel’s themes feel particularly close to home. Their experiences add a layer of richness to classroom discussions, as they relate the book to their own lives and cultures. My students are curious, thoughtful, and ready to engage with complex ideas, always eager to learn more and ask the big questions. They’re not afraid to challenge each other’s perspectives in a respectful and meaningful way, which will make reading this novel an exciting and enriching experience for all.

Ultimately, this project isn’t just about reading—it’s about growing together, developing empathy, and becoming more open-minded individuals. With Make Your Home Among Strangers, we’ll not only explore an incredible story, but also take a deeper look at the world we live in and the ways we all fit into it.
