My Students

My students, 40+ of them spanning all grades from 7-12, are students at an alternative day school program catering to those with special needs. Each student has a diagnosis, whether it be specific learning disabilities, social-emotional struggles, or health challenges that make it difficult to access the curriculum without assistance.

Being a program in transition, we have switched up our demographic, our educational philosophies, almost everything about our building in recent years.

Sadly, my students are often stigmatized by the community because of rumors and negative perceptions of past students. They are thought of as not capable of behaving or learning like a more "traditional" student. All of these presumptions are untrue and hurtful.

Because of these stigmas, we as educators of these students don't always have the opportunity to give them everything we wish to, such as new materials or class sets of books not borrowed from other schools in the district.

My Project

I inherited a classroom in an alternative school with an extensive class library, but lacking in class sets of many novels I teach. While I have access to an online database which houses some of the works I teach, it is difficult to hold a student's attention while they stare at a screen, and even more difficult to perform the plays we read when everyone is holding a computer and scrolling to find their parts. I am also in a building with spotty wifi that often renders my online works useless.

In the past two years, I have had to borrow class sets of works from other schools, find pdf files online of these works, and even read novels off my cell phone when the wifi went out.

I also have many students in need of differentiated instruction, and it is difficult to reach them when I do not have multiple means of delivering their instruction, such as books in print to supplement reading aloud or even just enough copies for every student to get one for themselves. My students deserve everything they need in order to succeed, and having full sets of novels in their curriculum is a great place to start.
