Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I work as a science teacher in grades 3k to 5th grade at a Title 1 school in Brooklyn. Title 1 means that a large percentage of our students come from low income households and are at risk for failing to meet academic standards. I've dedicated my professional life to being a public school teacher and this year have taken on the role of being the school wide science teacher.

As someone who was born and raised in Brooklyn, I love giving back to my community by expanding my student's understanding of the world around them through exploring science.

Unfortunately, in my school, there is an ongoing issue with funding to purchase supplies that I know will lead to quality instruction. I've been purchasing materials out of my own pocket but there is a gap between what I can provide and what I know would create an incredible environment for exploring and learning about science.

I work with students that are extremely curious and want to learn about everything. I'm so excited to be laying the foundation for the sophisticated and advanced learning by adding this makerspace to our school's resources.

My Project

Makerspaces are amazing addition to science classrooms. Maker spaces provide hands-on, creative ways to encourage students to design, experiment, build and invent as they deeply engage in science, engineering and tinkering.

Makerspaces are not just a lab, a craft area, a STEAM center, a tech room, or an art station; it's all of these combined into a dynamic and diverse student guided exploration of all these topics.

This Makerspace would be such an important addition to our fledgeling STEAM program in Brooklyn. This is my 1st year as a Science teacher for our whole school and I'm working on making our science program modern and competitive. With this amazing addition to our lab it will be all of these things and, most importantly, my students will be having fun while learning!
