My Students

"We are the music makers, and we are the dreamers of dreams" This is what my students see every day when they walk into class. This year they are getting the opportunity to be those music makers as they embark on a journey to play an instrument in concert band.

My students are an eclectic group of cultures.

They are from an urban school where they unfortunately have missed out on their music training at the elementary level. They are the hardest working students I have ever met. They will do whatever it takes to become masters of their instruments. Music is something they do both in and out of my classroom. Through their own interest and curiosity, many of the students have learned to play piano and guitar on their own time by watching videos and hanging out with friends. They will do anything to get better on an instrument and be able to play the songs they love.

My Project

There is no better feeling than watching a student smile when they get their first sound. It is a look that is comparable to their first home run, their first basket, their first 100 on a test. But it goes farther than that. It generates something inside of them that makes them become a musician. They go from that one sound to many sounds, to building scales and eventually sitting in a section in a concert. These students will now be able to play in class rather than sit and wait for a switch due to lack of quantity. They will now get to perform in a concert and develop a wonderful skill and tool for life. They get to demonstrate their hard work and effort to the school community, their parents and peers when they get up on that stage at the end of the year and make wonderful music with their fellow musicians.

Your generous donations will completely benefit my students' lives.

They are now getting the key to open another door for their very bright futures. They now have another skill to consider for their high school and college choices. Many urban school students do not think of music as an option for their future because of the lack of exposure. This exposure will give them that other option. It will give them a chance to go somewhere they never thought they could go.
