Several weeks ago my working-class students left for spring break, and have not been in the classroom since. Devices were given to every home that needed them. The county helped with mobile hot spots. And my job became on-call nearly 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. When multiple siblings are using the same computer, or if the stresses of pandemic life don't allow for work to be completed during office hours, I still want to be there to help them learn.
School is now "online" with lessons, remediation, and testing - and these students have shown their hunger for learning.
Their parents are mostly either out of work or stressed about being exposed to Covid and bringing it home. These really are interesting times.
My Project
I love science. I love reading. And so I totally love the novel "The Martian" which contains accurate science to describe how a stranded astronaut is able to stay alive on the surface of Mars until he can be rescued. Unfortunately, the original version has a language that is not really appropriate for children. Fortunately, Andy Weir, the author wrote a version for use in the classroom. Complete with teaching materials, it gives a great explanation of how science and thinking are invaluable. The exciting read will have students inspired to delve into both books and science.
"By placing a nail-biting life-and-death situation on Mars and adding a snarky and wise-cracking nerdy hero, Weir has created the perfect mix of action and space adventure." is what the Library Journal has to say about this book.
Since my school is located on the "Space Coast" of Florida, I think that my students would to read about a fast-thinking, science-loving explorer. This will be the perfect book to supplement our online learning while schools are closed.
