My Students

Coming from Russia, Korea, China, many parts of Africa, Mexico, South America, Canada, Pakistan, (to name just a few) and mixing in with locals can seem overwhelming to my students sometimes! In the face of that, Music Class is a safe place where the students can be themselves, try new things, and learn all at the same time.

Some come from troubled/broken homes, some are refugees, some have been given great emotional, physical, or learning challenges; but in the end, they are all kids--inquisitive, capable, and needing acceptance.

They feel the joy of a Music Community. We love to sing, dance, chant, create body percussion, play instruments, and listen to beautiful, inspiring music.

Although they don't know it, they are becoming proficient music readers and expressive music performers! Through Music participation, I have seen a significant change toward inclusion, acceptance, and tolerance.

My Project

In accordance with the Utah Core Music Standards for fifth and sixth grades, students will, with the Ukulele, be able to: "Improvise rhythmic patterns and musical ideas"; "evaluate and refine work, applying teacher-provided criteria and collaboratively developed guidelines"; "explore and demonstrate possible interpretations of a piece by varying tempo, dynamics, and phrasing"; "sing folk, traditional, and rounds from US and other countries in tune, with good vocal tone and clear diction"; "respond to musical terms and markings for tempo and dynamics"; "demonstrate persistence and cooperation in refining performance pieces"; perform music with expression, technical accuracy, and appropriate interpretation; watch and respond to the conductor--stay together, and demonstrate performance decorum".

They will gain the self-esteem and confidence with a new skill that will last a lifetime on an instrument that is so easily carried to any venue.

Many students want to be 'that kid' who is accompanying the group singing songs they all know. Becoming competent increases the chances that they will be willing to try new things and develop more talents. A confident person can learn to do almost anything!

The music we sing comes from all over the world (just like many of them!) Singing international folk music brings understanding of new cultures, as well as patience and tolerance for those unlike themselves.
