Ukuleles for Rock Stars!

Help me give my students a class set of ukuleles. A lot of my students have difficulty with their motor skills and ukuleles are much more accessible for them than acoustic guitars. We want to rock!

My Students

We are a school for high school-aged students with disabilities. We serve students diagnosed with various disabilities including cognitive delays, autism spectrum disorders (ASD), multiple disabilities, and speech and language delays. Our school emphasizes transition into adult life and independence, we, therefore, maintain partnerships with various community businesses and organizations who help us to provide work experience for our older students. 51% of our students are English Language Learners as well.

Students have walked into my room never having had the opportunity to touch an instrument before, but when they come to music now, they are "the music makers" and they are "the dreamers of dreams".

All of my students are fantastic, amazing, music-making, creative, wonderful people who enjoy coming to music class and expressing themselves. They are ALL rock stars. We are a District 75 school in the NYC Department of Education. Our school fosters a culture of support, independence, cooperation, community, and learning.

My Project

These ukuleles will provide my students who have difficulty with fine motor skills more success in making music than some other instruments. The ukuleles do not need as much finger pressure in order to play them accurately. My students learn music from all around the world and are requesting to play string instruments. Ukuleles will be the best options for them.

All of my students have physical, intellectual and developmental disabilities and they are fantastic, enthusiastic musicians.

Some of the first songs my students have requested to learn are "La Bamba", "Beat It" and "Señorita". The ukuleles can be adapted for earlier learners as well by using colored sticker dots, using only one string, or tuning the instrument to an open chord. All students in each class will be able to have success with these instruments.
