My Students

My students started this school year online. Last year, they made the abrupt switch from seeing their teacher and friends daily to remote learning from their homes. Learning how to play the ukulele will give them another outlet for their creativity.

Growing up in South Central Los Angeles, in a primarily working class, inner-city neighborhood, my students are not accustomed to spending so much time online.

They need a break from all that screen time. Learning to play the ukulele will provide a reason to shift from online to hands on learning.

Also, coming from families where parents may be working multiple jobs and struggling to meet everyday needs, my students may not have the opportunity to learn to play a musical instrument.

Learning to create music on a ukulele will help my students stay motivated, persist, and, hopefully, enjoy learning.

My Project

Many of my students are experiencing "zoom fatigue." I believe that learning to play the ukulele will help them move away from the screens and develop an appreciation for music.

In this pandemic world, teaching students to create music on the ukulele may help them to express their feelings and emotions in a safe and beautiful way.

I want to give my students the opportunity to explore the discipline, craft, and joy of being a musician. More importantly, I believe that their musical journey will open their minds, hearts and spirits.
